Aroma ARC-743-1NG: Overview

Push the switch down to start cooking. The steam vent hole in the glass lid may sometimes bubble over with starchy water, but this can be reduced by rinsing the rice a few times with water before putting it in the rice cooker pot. The steam vent releases excess moisture in the form of steam in the few minutes before the rice is fully cooked.

The outside, lid and pot of the rice cooker gets hot during cooking, so be careful not to burn your fingers by mistake.

The switch pops back to the keep warm position and its indicator light comes on when the rice has finished cooking. It is not a good idea to leave the rice on the keep warm cycle since it will eventually overcook the rice. It might be better to unplug the rice cooker after the rice has been cooked.

The glass lid, steamer basket, cooking pot, cup and spatula are dishwasher-safe. Be aware that the measurement cup and cooking pot is calibrated towards a 6-ounce cup capacity instead of the US standard of 8 ounces per cup.

How long does it cook rice?

One cup of uncooked rice takes about 20 minutes to cook. Two cups of uncooked rice need about 25 minutes to be done. Three cups of uncooked rice are finished after cooking for around 30 minutes.

Can it prepare brown rice?

The Aroma ARC-743-1NG (manufacturer) can cook brown rice, but maybe only less than two cups. Brown rice needs more water and cooks longer to become soft and tasty.

Can it both cook rice and steam food?

The Aroma ARC-743-1NG can cook both rice and steam food, but do not cook more than two cups of uncooked rice. Leave some space for the steamer tray.

You can also use the steamer tray without cooking any rice in the pot below. The instruction manual has instructions for steaming food. The manual also provides steaming tables with the amounts of water necessary and the approximate steaming times.

Can the Aroma ARC-743-1NG steam beef or fish?

Yes, you can steam meat in the steamer tray. Fish takes about 25 minutes to cook. Beef, chicken and pork needs about 30 minutes to cook. However, you should check that the meat is properly cooked before serving it. Add more water to the pot and cook it a little longer if the meat is not yet done.

What We Like About the Aroma ARC-743-1NG

  • Nonstick cooking pot is easy to clean.
  • Small size is perfect for one to two people.
  • Removable glass lid for maximum visibility and easy cleaning.
  • Steamer tray can steam vegetables or meat.

What We Do Not Like About It

  • The included rice measurement cup has a capacity of only 6 ounces.
  • It does not have an on/off power switch, it has to be switched off at the wall plug.
  • Steam vent hole in the glass lid may sometimes bubble over with starchy water.
  • The rice near the bottom of the pot will get hard if left on the automatic keep warm cycle.

Can the Aroma ARC-743-1NG make oatmeal porridge?

Yes, its booklet has a recipe for breakfast oatmeal. This is for about one cup of uncooked rolled oats. The Aroma ARC-743-1NG might be too small to make more than one cup. Oats tend to produce lots of bubbles, thus you need to prevent it from clogging up the steam vent. Leave the lid ajar so that it does not bubble too much. Remember to stir the oat porridge after about 10 minutes.
